Tooth Pain Dentist Cincinnati

Tooth pain may feel sharp, throbbing, constant, or noticeable only when you bite. It can develop suddenly or worsen gradually. Because several dental problems can cause similar symptoms, an examination can identify the source and determine what your tooth may need. If you need a tooth pain dentist in Cincinnati, contact Cincinnati Bright Smiles. Dr. Arti Patel and Dr. Thomas Palumbo assess the affected area, explain their findings, and may offer a same-day appointment based on needs and schedule availability.

Dentists generally prefer to save natural teeth whenever they can. However, there are situations when removing a tooth is the safest or most appropriate option. An extraction may be recommended when a tooth has:

  • Severe decay that cannot be restored
  • Significant damage from an injury or trauma
  • An infection that cannot be successfully treated
  • Advanced problems affecting the tooth's supporting structures
  • Other conditions that make keeping the tooth unhealthy or impractica

Decay, trauma, daily habits, and health history can all contribute to the need for an extraction. During your appointment, we can evaluate the affected tooth and discuss whether extraction or another treatment would provide the best outcome.

What May Cause Tooth Pain?

We begin by discussing when the pain started, what triggers it, and whether you have swelling or sensitivity.

What Happens During a Tooth Pain Appointment?

Dental Examination

We examine the affected tooth, nearby teeth, gums, and bite. We may also check how the tooth responds to pressure or temperature.

Diagnostic Imaging

Dental X-rays or CBCT imaging may reveal decay, infection, fractures, or bone changes that are not visible during the examination.

Review of Findings

We explain our findings, answer your questions, and discuss the available care options.

Dental Care for Different Causes of Tooth Pain

The recommended care depends on the source and extent of the problem. Not every toothache requires the same procedure.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

A filling may be appropriate when decay or minor structural damage affects part of a tooth. After preparing the area, we place tooth-colored material to rebuild the damaged portion and support everyday biting and chewing.
A crown may be recommended when a tooth has extensive damage, a large filling, or insufficient structure to support another filling. The crown covers the visible portion of the tooth and helps protect the remaining structure.

Dental Crowns

Root Canal Therapy

Inflammation or infection within the dental pulp can produce lingering sensitivity, spontaneous pain, swelling, or discomfort when biting. Root canal therapy clears the affected internal tissue before the canals are cleaned, shaped, and sealed. A crown may be recommended afterwards, depending on the tooth’s location and condition.

Tooth Extraction

An extraction may be considered when severe decay, infection, trauma, or structural damage means the tooth cannot remain functional. Our dentists perform many extractions in the office, although complex cases may require care from an oral surgeon.

The American Dental Association advises that dental pain accompanied by swelling, fever, or other signs of infection should receive prompt attention rather than relying on medication alone.
Contact us if tooth pain persists, returns, worsens, or occurs with:

  • Facial or gum swelling
  • Fever
  • Pain while biting
  • Drainage or a bad taste
  • A broken, loose, or discolored tooth
  • Bleeding
  • Lingering sensitivity
  • Difficulty opening your mouth

Call 911 for uncontrolled bleeding, major facial trauma, or swelling that affects breathing or swallowing.

When Should You Contact a Dentist?

Managing Discomfort Before Your Visit

Call us before arriving so we can discuss appointment availability. Until your visit:

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
  • Floss carefully if food may be caught between the teeth.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if swelling is present.
  • Avoid very hot, cold, sweet, or hard foods.
  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Follow the label directions for any over-the-counter medication you use.
  • Never place aspirin directly against the tooth or gum.

These steps may temporarily ease discomfort, but they do not identify why the tooth hurts. Even if the pain subsides, the underlying concern may still require evaluation.

Tooth Pain FAQs

Why does my tooth hurt only when I bite?

Pain when biting may be due to a crack, decay, a loose filling, inflammation around the root, or pressure from the way your teeth meet. Because small cracks can be difficult to see, the dentist may use an examination and imaging to investigate the area.

Can tooth pain disappear without dental care?

Pain may become less noticeable, but that does not always mean the underlying concern has been resolved. Symptoms can fluctuate, and an infected tooth may become less responsive if the internal tissue deteriorates. Arrange an evaluation even if severe pain suddenly subsides.

Will antibiotics make my toothache go away?

Antibiotics may be considered when a bacterial infection is spreading or produces certain systemic symptoms. They do not address every cause of dental pain or repair damaged tooth structure. The dentist must assess the source before recommending care.

Why are my teeth suddenly sensitive to cold?

Cold sensitivity may relate to gum recession, enamel wear, decay, crack, or recent dental work. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold item is gone deserves an evaluation.

Is it safe to visit the dentist for tooth pain during pregnancy?

Yes. Tell our team that you are pregnant and provide details about your stage of pregnancy, medications, and health history. We can consider this information when recommending diagnostic imaging, medication, or dental care.

Should I visit a dentist if the pain comes and goes?

Yes. Intermittent pain may still indicate decay, a crack, pulp inflammation, or another dental concern. Keeping track of triggers and how long the discomfort lasts can provide useful information during your appointment.

You do not need to wait for tooth pain to become unbearable before contacting us. Cincinnati Bright Smiles will listen to your concerns, assess the affected area, and explain the available options based on our findings. Contact our tooth pain dentist in Cincinnati to request an appointment. Same-day availability depends on your dental needs and our office schedule.
