Apply light pressure with a clean gauze if bleeding occurs.
Use a cold compress outside the cheek for swelling.
Avoid placing aspirin directly against the tooth or gums.
Do not chew on a broken or painful tooth.
Store a knocked-out permanent tooth in milk if it cannot be placed back in its socket without force.

A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate attention. Handle it by the crown rather than the root and contact a dental office promptly.

Uncontrolled bleeding, serious facial trauma, or swelling that interferes with breathing or swallowing requires hospital emergency care. Call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department.
